I Got it From My Mama
I got it from my mama
Not just the looks. Yes, I do look so much like my mother. The older I get, the more I see it in the mirror every day. I can’t complain, she’s beautiful! But luckily, I inherited her brains and some of her business-sense!
Lisa, our mama, didn’t go to college right after high school. She and our dad were gifted with me when she was just 19. They both worked hard and long hours. Mom worked mostly administrative jobs. I remember going to her office at Heritage Cablevision when I was younger, and then to see her after school at the local attorneys’ office she worked for. She eventually began working for our dad’s sister, who owned a medical transcription business (listening to doctors on a tiny cassette tape who have recorded their notes on patients and typing out what they say for their charts) and decided to branch off with her own business, Med-Tech Transcription. She loved the work, and when our dad was receiving treatments for melanoma, it allowed her the flexibility to accompany him to all his appointments; fly to California every two weeks with him for a clinical trial when he failed first line treatment; and finally to be at his bedside when those last few precious weeks came.
Dad passed at age 41, and Mom was only 39. She continued with her business for a while, but as many hospitals and clinics were moving away from transcription services and towards electronic medical records, she knew she needed to pursue something else. Having been a caregiver for our dad for those two years, she realized that a career in nursing would be very fulfilling. She, Natalie, and Larry (our step-dad, who had retired from the fire department), decided to all go together! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall in those classes with those three!
After graduating from Indian Hills, she worked briefly in mental health (didn’t love it as much as Natalie does), and since has been at the Knoxville Hospital, where she is now working as a utilization review coordinator. Her business knowledge has been a huge asset to me in starting my own business, and the fact that she is a nurse is a bonus! Her Quickbooks experience saved me this last tax season since my business has grown so rapidly! You might see her around the clinic helping with some admin tasks, or at one of our events doing some demo DiamondGlow services! And you’ll definitely see her gorgeous picture hanging on the wall behind our front desk!
